Understanding The Different Aspects Of Human Design

Human Design can be a minefield to navigate, so I created a quick glance reference guide, decoding the different terms used in Human Design so that exploring your own unique energy becomes easier.

Aura

Your aura is the energy field that surrounds you, influencing how you interact with the world and how others perceive you. In Human Design, each Type has a unique aura that plays a key role in communication and connection. Whether it’s the enveloping aura of a Generator or the sampling aura of a Reflector, understanding your aura helps you navigate life with ease.

Strategy

Strategy is your go-to tool for making decisions that are aligned with your true nature. Each Human Design Type has a specific Strategy: Generators respond, Projectors wait for invitations, Manifestors inform, and Reflectors wait through lunar cycles. By following your Strategy, you reduce resistance and flow more smoothly through life.

Authority

Your Authority is your inner compass, guiding you to make decisions that are right for you. It could be Emotional, Sacral, Splenic, or another type depending on your design. Listening to your Authority helps you trust yourself and make choices that truly resonate with who you are.

Gates

Gates are specific energy points in your Human Design chart, each representing a unique aspect of your personality and life themes. There are 64 Gates, and they can be thought of as the entry points for different energies and behaviours. Activated Gates in your chart shape your experiences and how you express yourself.

Channels

Channels are the connections between two Gates, creating a pathway of energy between Centres. When a Channel is defined in your chart, it represents a consistent and reliable energy flow that influences your talents, behaviours, and interactions with others.

Hanging Gates

Hanging Gates are Gates that are activated in your chart but don’t connect to another Gate to form a Channel. These Gates represent areas of potential, where you might feel a sense of incompleteness or seek connection with others who have the corresponding Gate defined.

Centres Defined

Defined Centres are the coloured shapes in your BodyGraph, indicating areas where you have consistent and reliable energy. These Centres represent aspects of your identity, communication style, or emotions that are steady and dependable in your life.

Centres Undefined

Undefined Centres are the white shapes in your BodyGraph, showing areas where you’re open to influence from the world around you. These Centres can be sources of wisdom but also points where you might take on others’ energy or feel pressure to conform.

Conscious Activations

Conscious activations are aspects of your design that you’re aware of and express naturally. They’re tied to your birth date and reflect traits that you consciously identify with and display in your everyday life.

Unconscious Activations

Unconscious activations are parts of your design that operate beneath the surface. They’re based on your design date (approximately 88 days before birth) and represent traits that others might notice in you, even if you’re not fully aware of them yourself.

Profile Energy

Your Profile is a combination of two numbers, representing how you see yourself and how others see you. It’s like a costume you wear in life, influencing your behaviour, relationships, and life purpose. Profiles like 1/3 (Investigator/Martyr) or 4/6 (Opportunist/Role Model) offer insight into your life’s journey.

Definition

Definition in Human Design refers to how your Centres are connected in your chart. You might be single, split, triple, or quadruple definition. This affects how you process information and interact with others, with more splits indicating a need for external connections to feel complete.

Incarnation Cross

Your Incarnation Cross is your life’s theme or purpose, derived from the positions of the Sun and Earth in your chart. It’s the overarching story of your life, guiding you toward the experiences and lessons that will shape your destiny.

Motivation

Motivation in Human Design is the driving force behind your actions and decisions. It’s one of the deeper layers of your design, indicating what truly motivates you at a core level, whether it’s hope, fear, need, or another foundational impulse.

Variables

Variables are advanced aspects of Human Design that delve into the nuances of how you digest information, your ideal environment, and your specific patterns of thought and behaviour. Understanding your Variables helps you fine-tune your life to align with your natural tendencies and strengths.

Environment

Your Environment in Human Design refers to the type of physical and energetic space that best supports your well-being and growth. It’s where you’re most likely to thrive, feel comfortable, and access your highest potential. Environments can be places like mountains, valleys, kitchens, or markets, and aligning yourself with your correct Environment can enhance your overall life experience.

Cognition

Cognition refers to your unique way of perceiving the world, often linked to one of the senses like smell, taste, or touch. It’s part of your deeper design, influencing how you interact with your environment and process information on a subtle, often unconscious level.
